Cannabis in Thailand 2026 — What Tourists Need to Know
If you've Googled "is weed legal in Thailand 2026" you've probably seen 10 contradicting answers. Here's the actual current situation — written by a dispensary owner in Pattaya.
The short answer
Buying and consuming cannabis is legal in Thailand if you go to a dispensary. Selling without a is not legal. Public smoking is technically restricted. Driving under the influence is illegal everywhere — including Thailand.
You must be 20 years or older. You cannot buy if pregnant or nursing. Carrying small amounts between locations is fine. Crossing borders with cannabis is illegal.
What changed in 2025–2026
The regulatory landscape tightened in late 2025. Recreational cannabis is still permitted, but with stricter licensing rules and reduced street-vendor activity. Many "weed trucks" disappeared. Dispensaries with proper licenses remain open and operating normally.
If you see a shop without visible licensing, signage in English/Thai, or staff who can't answer basic legality questions — walk out. Those shops are the ones at regulatory risk, and so are their customers.
How to spot a legitimate dispensary
- Visible displayed in the shop (ask to see it if it's not on the wall)
- ID check at entrance — staff should verify 20+ before you browse
- No outdoor sales — legitimate dispensaries operate inside, not on the street
- Strain labels with names, THC content, and prices visible
- Receipt option — they'll give you one if you ask
- Online presence — Google Maps listing with reviews, a website, transparent address
Pattaya specifically
Pattaya has more dispensaries than almost any other Thai city outside Bangkok. The good ones cluster in Wongamat (chill, residential, near the beach) and Walking Street (tourist nightlife, all-night energy). Skip the random ones along Beach Road — many opened during the boom and don't have current licenses.
At Weed Box, our was renewed for 3 years in 2025. We display it in both branches. We card every guest. We don't sell to anyone we suspect is underage or impaired.
Things you should not do
- Don't drive after. Police checkpoints are real in Pattaya at night.
- Don't take it home. Airport customs in your home country don't care about Thai legality.
- Don't buy from beach vendors. Usually low quality, sometimes not cannabis at all.
- Don't smoke in public temples, near schools, or in government buildings. Obvious but worth saying.
- Don't share with anyone under 20. Same penalty as selling.
Prices in 2026
Honest market: per gram for solid quality, for premium strains, for truly exotic. Pre-rolls usually. Edibles depending on strength. If a shop is asking /gram with no clear strain story, you're paying tourist tax.

Cannabis tourism in Thailand 2026 is still possible — but it requires the same common sense as anywhere else. Go to shops. Don't drive. Don't try to take it home. Be respectful of locals who may not share your enthusiasm.
